14. CloverDX Model Context Protocol (MCP) API
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an emerging standard that enables AI agents to interact with external services and data sources. It provides a standardized way for AI models to access tools, resources, and context from various applications, allowing them to perform tasks beyond their base capabilities.
CloverDX MCP Server exposes a comprehensive set of tools that enable AI agents to fully interact with CloverDX:
-
Sandbox Management: browse, read, write, and organize files within CloverDX sandboxes.
-
Job Execution: run graphs and jobflows, wait for results, monitor status, and abort running jobs.
-
Graph Editing: create and modify CloverDX graphs and jobflows using structured XML operations.
-
Server Diagnostics: access server logs, performance metrics, and internal system database.
-
Component Reference: discover and configure CloverDX component types.
-
Knowledge Base: access the CloverDX knowledge library and manage project-scoped knowledge entries.
-
External Databases: query and inspect databases accessible via JDBC.
-
Support: report issues directly to the CloverDX Support Portal.
MCP API is available at:
Besides this main endpoint, each tool group has an endpoint of its own. They all serve the same tools; what differs is how much of the catalogue a client connected to them sees:
| Endpoint | Serves |
|---|---|
|
Everything the caller is allowed to use, from every group. |
|
The diagnostic group only. |
|
The authoring group only. |
|
The Data Manager group only: data sets, their columns and their rows. Offered only where a licensed Data Manager is configured locally on this Server, to callers holding both the Use AI Data Manager MCP tools and the Access to Data Manager app permission. Not served by a Server that proxies MCP to another Server. |
The older URL /clover/mcp/mcp still works and serves the same as /clover/mcp/all/v1, but it is deprecated. Configure new clients with the versioned one.

MCP Tools Reference
The following tables list all MCP tools available in CloverDX Server, grouped by functional area. The Access column indicates whether a tool is available in read-only mode, the Permission column names the permission a caller needs to use the tool. To configure which tools the Server exposes, see MCP tools permissions configuration. Tools that work with sandbox files additionally honour the sandbox file access configuration, which can restrict them to files matching administrator-defined patterns.
Tool groups and permissions
Independently of the functional areas below, every tool belongs to a tool group, and the group decides which permission its caller needs:
-
Use AI Diagnostic MCP tools covers the tools for looking into a running Server – listing jobs, their status, logs and tracking, server and performance logs, the system database, browsing and reading sandbox files, and reporting an issue to CloverDX support. These tools need no seat.
-
Use AI Authoring MCP tools covers the tools that build or change a solution – editing sandbox files, graph editing, job execution, the component reference and the knowledge base. A user holding this permission occupies one AI Authoring seat – the same seat that licenses the AI Assistant in the Designer.
-
Use AI Data Manager MCP tools covers the tools working with Data Manager data sets. It needs Access to Data Manager app as well, and the group is offered only where a licensed Data Manager is configured locally on the Server – see Data Manager in the AI Assistant. A user holding this permission occupies one AI Authoring seat; a user holding it together with Use AI Authoring MCP tools occupies one seat, not two.
Granting Use all MCP tools grants all three permissions. See MCP permissions and AI Authoring seats for the whole model.
The authoring and the Data Manager group are not available through an MCP proxy.

Data Manager Tools
Tools for discovering and administering Data Manager data sets and their rows. Transactional data sets (rows staged on their way to a target system) and reference data sets (managed lookup tables) have separate tools, because their settings and statistics differ; only the search covers both. Every tool but the search answers with the JSON of the Data Manager REST API without @self, and shows a caller only the data sets they may see in Data Manager; a writing tool is subject to the same data set permissions as the REST API. The tools are offered only where a licensed Data Manager is configured locally on this Server. The writing tools offer nothing the REST API does not; two of its bulk row operations, purge and approveAll, are left out because they act on a whole data set without naming rows.
